Lightning Strike to Church of St Odulph, Pillaton, Cornwall
Le Page Architects have been commissioned for the repair and conservation of St Odulph, Pillaton.
On the night of 22nd January in the middle of a snow storm the church tower was struck by a freak lightning bolt which caused the north east pinnacle to literally explode!
The medieval church was left looking like a bomb site as huge pieces of masonry were thrown in 360 degrees over and through the roofs. The largest stones weigh around ¾ tonne and some were left lodged on the main church roof as well as the tower itself.
The church was consecrated by Bishop Bronescombe in 1259 as one of around 40 churches founded at that time on his progression from Exeter to Truro. The church is listed Grade I.
