Cook’s Boathouse, Salcombe, Devon

The commission was to modernise and refurbish the Boathouse which is on the waterfront in the centre of Salcombe. The clients wished to create a high quality letting property as well as lovely holiday home for their own use. The conversion gave an opportunity to extend and develop the vocabulary established in the design of the award winning adjacent boathouse conversion which won a Town and Country Award.

By reducing the amount of boat storage space on the ground floor of the building, we were able to provide a self contained bedroom/dormitory area, which could be included in the holiday letting area, or else be used by the clients as a separate unit. A generous hall, a new glazed conservatory and a wider and more welcoming stair to serve the first floor were also provided.

With careful planning the building now sleeps at least ten people, instead of the six previously and now has two bathrooms and two shower rooms. The first floor balcony facing the estuary was redesigned to have a light appearance with a level threshold to form a large open plan inside/outside area.

Natural light floods the house through new roof lights and by way of nautical circular windows set in sustainable iroko boarding for a minimum maintenance finish.
