The Market Building, Plymouth

The Market Building, Devonport project was first launched in 2015.  An enabling works package for the restoration of Duke Street wall and stripping of lead paint to the cast iron structure commenced in September 2018 with the main package let in March 2019.

The project has helped bring this redundant and former scheduled ancient monument back into use, restoring much of the historic building fabric.  The existing building represented approximately 40% of the original market complex of buildings on and around this site in Devonport.  The project has helped bring back activity and life into this building, creating new active frontages on the streetscene, reminiscent of the original sense of the place.

Alongside mind-blowing immersive experiences, the Market Hall provides inspiring co-working space for all kinds of creative, digital and immersive businesses; the heart of the region’s emerging immersive tech ‘cluster’.

As part of the project brief was a requirement for a BREEAM to assess the building’s environmental, social and economic performance.  A bespoke method of measurement was written by the BRE given the unique combination of existing and new building components.  The project targeted and achieved a BREEAM rating of very good.
